Braces are the English equivalent to suspenders. Modern braces are made from strong fabric or material and are used either as a fashion accessory or a practical replacement for belts to keep pants in place. Many people over the last 200 years have worn them. Larry King the TV host, Benjamin Franklin the scientist, the hooligans from the cult move, "A Clockwork Orange," and Michael Douglas in the movie "Wall Street" just to name a few. Braces have epitomised almost every class or situation in movies.
Historians agree that the first suspenders were worn in France about 200 years ago. They were silk strips attached to the pant's buttonholes and were worn under the waistcoat. They were not revealed to the unsuspecting public. Brace were worn by men during that time. The fashion during the early part of the last century dictated that men had to wear braces because the waistline was so high that a belt would not do the job. buttons were used to attach them to the pants. As the waistline lowered during the century, so did the need to wear braces. Late in the 19th century metal clips were invented that attached to braces. The wearer could wear them with any clothing. The clip added many options for the wearers of braces.

The belt became more popular. Braces did not disappear completely. They were recommended by medical doctors for people with large waists. Wearers would not have pressure on their stomachs that a tight belt would have.

The post second world war trend was to wear the braces outside the shirt, without a coat. The shape of the braces on the back of the wearer moved from an "H" shape to an "X" shape, then to the current popular "Y" shape. (This is the shape you see when you are looking at the back of someone who is wearing braces) The "H" shape was used by fire fighters.
Women started wearing braces in public during the 1960's and 1970's. It was one of the trends relating to the "unisex" approach. During the 1980's, fashion writers recommended the wearing of suspenders loosely was a "sensual look." Women in Asian countries embraced the humble suspenders several years later. They are now a "must have item" for many women, particularly younger women.
It is likely that braces will be a chosen accessory by men and women alike. If you have not tried them, now is a good time because they are an inexpensive, highly visible and unique fashion accessory.
